When people hear Dragon Ball, it’s easy to imagine Goku facing incredibly powerful opponents in battles involving planets, dimensions and even the fate of the universe.

But the franchise began in a very different way.

The original Dragon Ball manga began publication in 1984, introducing Goku as a young boy. The early story had a strong combination of adventure, fantasy and comedy, creating a very different atmosphere from the massive battles that would later define the franchise.

Goku meets Bulma and eventually joins her journey in search of the legendary Dragon Balls. These early adventures focus heavily on traveling, discovering new places and encountering different characters and situations along the way.

The structure of these stories was very different from the major combat-focused arcs that would eventually become one of Dragon Ball’s biggest trademarks.

Goku was already presented as an exceptionally strong child, but the scale of his abilities was still far removed from the enormous levels of power that would appear later in the series.

When Dragon Ball Became More Focused on Fighting

As the story developed, martial arts tournaments became increasingly important.

Battles began taking up more of the narrative, while new opponents and increasingly dangerous situations expanded the world of the series.

Over time, Dragon Ball gradually evolved from a fantasy adventure into an increasingly large-scale action story.

That evolution remains one of the most interesting aspects of the franchise.

The Goku who originally traveled alongside Bulma in search of the Dragon Balls eventually became one of the most recognizable characters in global pop culture.

For that reason, going back to the beginning can be a particularly interesting experience for fans who primarily discovered Dragon Ball through its legendary battles.

The essence of Goku was already there from the start.

But the enormous adventure that would eventually become Dragon Ball was only beginning.
