Spider-Noir Canceled After One Season Despite 11 Emmy Nominations

The live-action Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage will not return for a second season.

Prime Video has canceled the series after just one season and eight episodes, only a little more than three months after its debut.

The decision is surprising considering the strong response from critics and audiences.

Spider-Noir currently holds a 92% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the series received 11 Emmy nominations in 2026, the most of any Prime Video production that year.

Why Was Spider-Noir Canceled?

The exact reason for the cancellation has not been officially explained by Prime Video.

However, reports have pointed to the relationship between audience retention and the show’s production costs as an important factor.

Spider-Noir accumulated approximately 2.6 billion minutes watched in the United States during its first six weeks, but it reportedly struggled to maintain a strong position among the platform’s most-watched titles.

The production also had additional costs associated with its unusual presentation.

The series was released in both full color and black-and-white versions, giving viewers two different ways to experience the story.

In other words, the critical response was strong, but the available audience data apparently wasn’t enough to justify continuing the series.

Nicolas Cage Reacts to the Cancellation

Despite the cancellation, Nicolas Cage does not appear to view the end of the series as a major disappointment.

The actor said that, for him, one season was enough to tell the story he wanted with the character.

Cage also described the first season as a satisfying conclusion to his version of the character.

And shortly after the cancellation, Spider-Noir received another major achievement.

The series won five Creative Arts Emmy Awards, including awards for cinematography, title design, sound editing, special visual effects and stunt coordination.

That means Spider-Noir managed to collect significant industry recognition even after its cancellation.

The Spider-Man Universe Isn’t Going Away

The cancellation does not mean the end of the partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

The companies are continuing to develop television projects based on characters from Sony’s Spider-Man universe.

Reports indicate that several Spider-Man-related projects remain in development, with at least one reportedly getting close to receiving a series order.

So while Spider-Noir is over, the broader universe created through the Amazon-Sony partnership is still moving forward.

A Strange Ending for Spider-Noir

Spider-Noir has become an unusual case in the streaming world.

The series was well received by critics and audiences, earned 11 Emmy nominations and won five awards, yet still ended after only eight episodes.

For Nicolas Cage, however, the story appears to have reached a satisfying conclusion.

Perhaps the biggest mystery surrounding Spider-Noir isn’t discovering who the superhero really is…

but why Prime Video decided to leave him behind.
