One of the biggest questions for anyone moving from a PS4 to a PS5 is simple: can you still play your PS4 games on the newer console?

The good news is that the PS5 was designed with backward compatibility in mind.

The vast majority of PS4 games can be played on PS5, allowing players to bring much of their existing game library to the newer generation.

However, there are a few important details to understand, especially when it comes to physical discs, digital games, saved data and games that have received PS5 versions.

Does the PS5 Play PS4 Games?

Yes.

The PS5 can play the vast majority of PS4 games through backward compatibility.

This means that if you already own a large PS4 library, you generally don’t have to start over when moving to PS5.

Digital PS4 games purchased through your PlayStation account can be downloaded to a compatible PS5, while physical PS4 games can be used on a PS5 equipped with a disc drive.

Can You Play Physical PS4 Games on PS5?

Yes, but there is an important distinction between the different PS5 models.

If you have a PS5 with a disc drive, you can insert a compatible PS4 game disc and play it.

The console reads the PS4 disc and allows you to launch the game.

However, the disc normally needs to remain inserted whenever you want to play the game.

What About a PS5 Without a Disc Drive?

A digital-only PS5 cannot read physical PS4 discs.

If you own physical PS4 games and plan to move to a digital-only PS5, those discs cannot simply be converted into digital licenses.

You would need to purchase the digital versions when available.

Can You Play Digital PS4 Games on PS5?

Yes.

Digital PS4 games purchased through your PlayStation account can generally be downloaded and played on PS5.

After signing into the same PlayStation Network account, your compatible purchases can be accessed through your game library.

This is particularly useful for players who built their PS4 library digitally.

Do PS4 Games Look Better on PS5?

Not necessarily, but some can benefit from the PS5’s additional hardware power.

Depending on the game, improvements may include:

• Faster loading
• More stable performance
• Higher frame rates
• Improved resolution
• Better texture quality
• Reduced loading times

Some games have also received specific PS5 upgrades that provide more substantial improvements.

However, simply playing a PS4 game on PS5 does not automatically mean that every game receives a complete graphical upgrade.

What Is a PS5 Upgrade?

Some games offer a dedicated PS5 version or upgrade.

In these cases, developers can take advantage of the newer hardware more extensively.

A PS5 version may include features such as:

• Improved graphics
• Higher frame rates
• Faster loading
• Ray tracing
• DualSense features
• Improved audio
• Higher-resolution textures

The exact improvements depend on the individual game.

Can You Transfer Your PS4 Save Data to PS5?

In many cases, yes.

Save data can potentially be transferred from PS4 to PS5 using several methods, depending on the game and how your data is stored.

Options can include cloud storage through PlayStation Plus, transferring data between consoles or using other supported methods.

However, save compatibility can vary between individual games.

This is particularly important when a game has separate PS4 and PS5 versions.

Do All PS4 Games Work on PS5?

Almost all PS4 games are compatible with PS5, but there are exceptions.

Sony has identified a small number of PS4 titles that are not playable on PS5.

Compatibility can also vary depending on the specific game and version.

Before purchasing an older PS4 game specifically to play on PS5, it’s worth checking its compatibility.

Can PS4 Accessories Work on PS5?

Some PS4 accessories can also be used with PS5.

For example, the DualShock 4 controller can be used to play supported PS4 games on PS5.

However, the DualShock 4 isn’t intended to replace the PS5’s DualSense controller for native PS5 games.

Some specialized accessories can also have different compatibility requirements.

Can You Play PS4 Games With a PS5 Controller?

Yes.

The PS5 DualSense controller can be used to play compatible PS4 games running on PS5.

This means you don’t necessarily need a DualShock 4 simply because you’re playing a PS4 game.

Native PS5 games, however, are designed around the DualSense controller and its additional features.

What Happens to Your PS4 Game Library?

Your PS4 library doesn’t disappear when you move to PS5.

If your games are connected to the same PlayStation account, compatible digital purchases remain associated with that account.

Physical games also remain yours, provided you have a PS5 model capable of reading the discs.

This makes upgrading from PS4 to PS5 considerably easier for players with large libraries.

Should You Keep Your PS4?

For most players who already own a PS5, there may be less need to keep a PS4 solely for playing compatible games.

However, there can still be reasons to keep the older console.

For example, you may have physical accessories, specific games that aren’t compatible with PS5, or simply want a second console in another room.

PS4 vs PS5 Backward Compatibility

The biggest advantage of PS5 backward compatibility is convenience.

Instead of abandoning an entire previous-generation library, players can continue using many of the games they already own.

This also means that moving to a newer console doesn’t necessarily mean leaving older games behind.

Final Thoughts

So, can you play PS4 games on PS5?

Yes. The PS5 supports the vast majority of PS4 games, whether you own them digitally or physically, although physical games require a PS5 model with a disc drive.

Some PS4 games can also benefit from the PS5’s faster hardware or receive dedicated PS5 upgrades.

If you’re considering upgrading from PS4 to PS5, backward compatibility is one of the console’s most useful features because it allows you to continue enjoying much of your existing game library while moving to newer hardware.
